Food is the basic need of all living things. Green plants can prepare their own food. Animals cannot prepare their own food. They depend on plants and other animals for food. Depending on the type of food they need, the animals are devided into herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Herbivores are plant-eating animals. Carnivores are flesh-eating animals. Omnivores are animals which eat both plants and meat. The feeding habit of animals depend upon the parts of their body. Teeth, mouth parts, claws and legs are important parts that help animals when they are feeding. Herbivores mammals have more grinding teeth. Carnivores mammals have long pointed teeth to hold their prey and razor sharp cheek teeth to tear meat. Omnivores animals have all the three kinds of teeth. Some herbivores chew the cud and they are ruminants. Butterflies and moths have proboscis to suck nector from flowers. Leeches, mosquitoes and bugs suck blood of animals and human beings.
